Special Envoy to Afghan peace reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad is set to participate in the Moscow summit scheduled for Thursday.
Ned price a spokesman for the Department of State in a press briefing said that Khalilzad planned to visit Moscow and join the meeting.
According to price Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, the US is engaging in the region and with the support of the international partners, America is pushing to accelerate the peace process and reach a political settlement.
As part of US efforts to encourage the Afghan peace process, Zalmay Khalilzad will join the Moscow summit.
“This meeting will complement all other international efforts to support the Afghanistan peace process and also reflects the international community’s concerns about the progress to date,” Price said.
Earlier, Zalmay Khalilzad, US Special Envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation, returned to Kabul on Monday following his meeting with Taliban negotiators including Mullah Baradar in Qatar.
He has reportedly met with Afghan leaders and discussed recent developments in the peace process.
In a statement, the Presidential Palace said that Khalilzad discussed his recent trips to the regional, neighboring countries and Doha with President Ashraf Ghani.
The statement added that both the US special Envoy and President Ghani talked over the next steps in the Afghan peace process.
Khalilzad also met the Head of the High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah.
Abdullah tweeted that they had discussed the peace process, new initiatives, the latest political developments, and steps forward.
