114 garment factories closed amid labour unrest

Labor unrest in Bangladesh’s garment industry has led to the closure of 114 factories in Ashulia and Gazipur industrial areas, according to the BGMEA. Workers are demanding overdue wages, increased benefits, and equal employment opportunities. At least 54 factories were closed on a “no work, no pay” basis. The situation remains tense, with heavy police and army presence in some areas. Factory owners decided to shut down operations after incidents of vandalism.
