Taiwan to work with US to face ‘authoritarian expansionism’: President Lai
Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te told visiting US lawmakers that Taiwan will work with the United States to counter “authoritarian expansionism,” referring to China’s recent military drills around the island. US Senator Tammy Duckworth announced support for legislation sanctioning China if it invades Taiwan. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s defense ministry detected 28 Chinese aircraft near the island within three hours, a week after Beijing’s drills simulating a blockade. Lai has vowed to defend Taiwan’s sovereignty, prompting Beijing’s harsh rhetoric and military pressure. Photo: AFP
