The Miniket mockery

By Redoy K

Despite a government ban, rice millers in Bangladesh continue to over-polish rice and market it as “miniket,” removing essential nutrients. This practice wastes about 16 lakh metric tons of rice annually. Experts warn of significant nutrient loss in over-polished rice. Millers cite lack of specific government guidelines as the reason for continued polishing. The food ministry claims a policy is being prepared, but implementation and monitoring remain challenges. The practice also inflates rice prices for consumers. Daily Star
