US urges calm in Bangladesh, salutes army role
The U.S. has called for calm in Bangladesh following Sheikh Hasina’s departure and widespread protests. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller welcomed the military’s formation of an interim government instead of cracking down on protesters. The U.S. urged restraint, called for investigations into recent casualties, and emphasized that Bangladeshis should decide their future government. Miller also noted the U.S. had recently criticized Hasina’s autocratic tendencies. AFP
