58 die after boat capsizes in Central Africa: rescuers

By Redoy K

At least 58 people died after an overloaded wooden river boat capsized in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, while heading to a village chief’s funeral. The boat was carrying over 300 people when it sank on the Mpoko river on Friday. Rescue efforts managed to retrieve 58 bodies, but the total number of victims is unknown. The government has announced an investigation and support for victims’ families. The tragedy highlights the unrest and poverty plaguing the conflict-ridden Central African Republic, one of the world’s least developed countries.
