CEC, all four election commissioners resign

Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal and four election commissioners resigned amid political turmoil. This follows the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government and parliament’s dissolution on August 5-6, 2024, after mass protests. The resignations come as the constitutional deadline to hold elections within 90 days approaches. Awal cited the difficulty of ensuring fair elections under the current system and proposed reforms, including proportional representation and phased voting.
