Stocks fall for third straight day

Shares at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) continued their downward trend for the third consecutive day on Sunday. Despite starting higher, the benchmark DSEX index fell 0.35% to close at 5,233.67. The Shariah-based DSES and blue-chip DS30 indices also declined. Turnover decreased by 6.67% to Tk 349 crore, with 219 issues losing ground, 124 advancing, and 48 remaining unchanged.

Remittance rises 32% in May

Remittance inflow to Bangladesh witnessed a 32.35% year-on-year increase to $2.25 billion in May 2024, compared to $1.7 billion in the same period last year. The May receipts were also 10.29% higher than April 2024. Industry experts attribute the surge to migrant workers sending more money ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha festival, as is typical before major religious festivals in Bangladesh.

In a case involving misappropriation of around Tk 25.22 crore from Grameen Telecom Workers’ profit participation fund, a Dhaka court today set June 12 for passing an order on framing charges against Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus and 13 others. Earlier, the accused sought discharge from the case, while the Anti-Corruption Commission argued for framing charges against them.

Benapole-Mongla train service begins

Bangladesh launched its first direct rail service between Benapole and Mongla Port on June 1st. The inaugural train, carrying 500 passengers, departed Benapole at 10am and is scheduled to reach Mongla at 12:50pm after covering 138.64km. The return service will leave Mongla at 1pm.
