Four death row inmates escaped from Bogura District Jail in Bangladesh last night. Police arrested them this morning in the Chashi Bazar area of Bogura Sadar upazila. The convicts, all accused in a murder case, are Nazrul (68), Amir Hamza (41), Abdul Mannan (34), and Farid Sheikh (30). Jail authorities haven’t disclosed escape details. Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) has arrested Abdul Samad, 50, for allegedly killing his wife Farida Yasmin, 42, by hitting her with a bamboo during a family dispute in Sreepur, Gazipur on June 13. Tejgaon police arrested Farid Prakash, 26, at Karwan Bazar metro rail station in Dhaka while he was attempting to snatch a passenger’s mobile phone. Farid, along with his accomplices, tried to snatch the phone, but other passengers noticed and detained him before handing him over to the police.

During interrogation, accused Siyam Hossain revealed that Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar was smothered with a pillow at a flat in New Town, Kolkata. A woman, allegedly the girlfriend of prime accused Akhtaruzzaman, aided in strangling Anar. His body was dismembered, with parts dumped in New Town, Bagjola canal, and near the Bangladesh border. The CID recovered human bones near a canal after questioning Siyam and is searching for remaining body parts.
A 40-year-old man named Mizanur Rahman was arrested in Jashore’s Jhikargacha upazila for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl at gunpoint after luring her to his house on the pretext of domestic work. Though locals attempted arbitration imposing a fine, the victim’s family filed a case with police. The victim underwent medical examination. Police arrested the accused and a case was filed against him for the rape of the minor.
A 50-year-old Bangladeshi man, Md Anwar Hossain from Cumilla’s Burichang upazila, was shot dead by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along the Jamtala border while allegedly trying to enter India to bring sugar. A 25-year-old youth named Moniruzzaman Rafi was killed and another, Raihan (26), injured in a clash between two groups over a trifling matter at Patenga sea beach area in Chattogram. The altercation erupted due to loud noise from Rafi’s motorcycle. Police arrested four suspects in connection with the murder after the stabbing incident early today.
A police constable named Monirul was shot dead by his colleague Kawsar Ahmed near the Palestinian embassy in Dhaka’s Baridhara area around 11:45 pm. Both were on duty in front of the embassy. Kawsar was detained, and the area was cordoned off. A passerby named Sajjad, who works as a driver for an embassy, also sustained gunshot wounds. Police recovered bullet casings from the spot and deployed additional forces, including a SWAT team, in the diplomatic zone after the incident.
Twenty-two years after the murder of BUET student Sabekun Nahar Sony during a clash between two Chhatra Dal groups, the two main accused, Mokammel Hayat Khan and Nurul Islam, remain at large. Sony’s father passed away last year without seeing the killers punished. While one accused has completed his jail term, four others are still in prison. An elderly woman, Rezina Begum, 75, was found dead with her throat slit at her home in Dhangaon village, Birganj upazila, Dinajpur. Police recovered the body from her separate room after her husband discovered it. The authorities suspect it to be a pre-planned murder but are currently without leads. A 28-year-old man, Mohammad Ali, a supporter of the newly elected upazila chairman in Bahadurpur village, Sadar upazila, was killed by a group of 4-5 people who shot him in the head. He was returning home after attending a victory programme when the incident occurred. The body was sent for autopsy, and law enforcement agencies are investigating the case.
A 42-year-old garment worker, Jhumor Kanti Baul, was killed after being punched by another passenger, Monjur Mia, 55, over taking a window seat in a Dhaka-bound train at Narsingdi Railway Station on Thursday morning. In a shocking incident, one of the newborn twin babies was stolen from the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) just hours after birth. In the MP Anwarul Azim murder case, Celesty Rahman confessed that she posed as the wife of the alleged mastermind Aktaruzzaman to rent the Kolkata flat where the MP was killed. She was present during the dismemberment of Azim’s body. After her confessional statement, the court sent Celesty to jail. The detective sources revealed these details of her involvement in the gruesome murder. Additionally, the court issued an arrest warrant against another suspect, Siam Hossain, who is currently in Nepal police custody.
