Russian warships arrive in Chattogram on goodwill visit

Russia to send 30,000 tonnes of fertiliser

Russia has agreed to provide 30,000 tonnes of potassium fertilizer to Bangladesh free of cost, as announced by Russian Ambassador Alexander Mantytskiy during a meeting with Home and Agriculture Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowhdury. Foreign ministry recalls seven envoys

Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry has recalled seven ambassadors on contractual postings and five other officials from overseas missions. This move is part of the interim government’s effort to make personnel changes across ministries. The recalled ambassadors were serving in the US, Russia, Maldives, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Germany, and UAE. Dhaka wants to import natural gas from Azerbaijan

Bangladesh proposed signing a memorandum of understanding with Azerbaijan to import natural gas during the first foreign office consultation between the two countries in Baku. Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, who led the Bangladesh delegation, also requested Azerbaijan to import RMG, pharmaceuticals and recruit manpower from Bangladesh. Both sides stressed on high-level visits and discussed cooperation in various sectors.

Ambassador Muhit elected as UNGA 2nd committee chair

Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, has been unanimously elected as the Chair of the Second Committee of the 79th UN General Assembly. The Second Committee addresses economic, financial, and environmental affairs. PM likely to visit India June 21-22, China July 9-12

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to visit New Delhi on June 21-22 and Beijing on July 9-12 to strengthen Bangladesh’s ties with India and China, two major economic powers in Asia. Her visit to India will be the first bilateral engagement with PM Modi since September 2022. The upcoming China visit, dubbed a “game-changer” by the Chinese ambassador, aims to boost trade, investment, cultural exchange and align with Bangladesh’s “Vision 2041” and “Smart Bangladesh” goals. MP Azim murder: Main associate of Shimul Bhuiyan arrested

In a major breakthrough in the MP Anwarul Azim Anar murder case, the Detective Branch of police arrested Saiful Alam alias Saiful Member, a close associate of prime suspect Shimul Bhuiyan, from Jashore last night. Saiful, a former leader of the Purba Bangla Communist Party, was the prime accused in the murder of Prof Uday Sangkar and wanted in two other murder cases. He was arrested with 960 grams of explosives and is believed to have links to MP Azim’s murder as he was in India during that time, along with Shimul Bhuiyan.

Confucius Institute to be set up at RU

Chinese International Education Foundation (CIEF) will establish a Confucius Institute at Rajshahi University within a year to offer Chinese language and cultural courses for Bangladeshi students. The decision was made during a meeting in Beijing between RU Vice-Chancellor Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar and CIEF officials. The institute will be jointly set up by RU and China’s Honghe University. It aims to bridge differences between universities of the two countries. Around 15 RU students were selected to visit China in September under the same program. CopyRetry

India interested to finance Bangladesh’s Teesta project: Hasan Mahmud

India has expressed interest in financing Bangladesh’s Teesta river project, said Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud after meeting Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra. They discussed PM Hasina’s upcoming visit to India after the Indian elections. Border killings, non-lethal weapons use, easing visa regimes, and regional connectivity including hydropower import from Nepal/Bhutan via India were also discussed. Hasan praised the excellent Bangladesh-India ties under Hasina and Modi’s leadership.
