Midnight chaos as BCL attacks sit-in at JU

Quota reform protesters at Jahangirnagar University held a sit-in demonstration in front of the Vice Chancellor’s residence, protesting an earlier attack by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) members. Around midnight, the protesters took shelter inside the VC’s compound as BCL members again threw brickbats at them. Earlier, at least 50 students were injured in a two-hour-long BCL attack during a protest march. Police are trying to control the situation. 2 students hurt as BCL attacks quota protesters at CU

BCL activists allegedly attacked anti-quota protesters at Chittagong University on Sunday night, injuring two students. The protest was sparked by a reported comment from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Students gathered at zero point, chanting slogans. BCL members chased and assaulted protesters near Kata Pahar area, with reports of physical abuse and injuries. The incident occurred around 11:30pm, leaving several students hurt. Source Daily Star

According to new UNICEF data, 9 out of 10 children in Bangladesh face violent discipline at home, affecting over 45 million children. UNICEF, in partnership with ministries, is working to create a violence-free environment for families and children through initiatives like Sports for Development and Child Protection Community Hubs, which have prevented over 1,000 child marriages in 2023.

70% of environment journalists report attacks, threats, pressure: UN

A UNESCO report revealed that 70% of environmental journalists from 129 countries experienced attacks, threats, or pressure related to their job. Two in five of those journalists subsequently faced physical violence. UNESCO warned of an increase in violence and intimidation against journalists reporting on the environment and climate. At least 749 journalists and news outlets covering environmental issues were targeted with murder, violence, detention, or legal attacks between 2009 and 2023, with a 42% increase in attacks from 2019 to 2023.
