The Bangladesh cricket team has arrived in Antigua and Barbuda to play their T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 stage matches against Australia on June 21 and India on June 22 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. They qualified for the Super 8s after defeating Nepal and will also face Afghanistan on June 25 in the same stage.
West Indies produced a dominant performance, thrashing Afghanistan by 104 runs in their final T20 World Cup group stage match. Nicholas Pooran’s blistering 98 off 53 balls powered West Indies to a formidable total of 218/5. In reply, Afghanistan’s batting faltered as they were bundled out for 114 in 16.2 overs, unable to cope with West Indies’ bowling attack.
The T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8s stage will feature India, Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh in Group 1 and West Indies, South Africa, England, USA in Group 2. Teams will play three matches each, with the top two from each group qualifying for the semi-finals. The schedule includes exciting clashes like India vs Bangladesh and England vs West Indies during the Super 8s phase.
Bangladesh suffered a disastrous start in their crucial T20 World Cup 2024 group match against Nepal, losing openers Tanzid Tamim and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto within the first two overs after being asked to bat first. At 13/2 after 3 overs, Shakib Al Hasan and Liton Das were left to rebuild the innings as the Tigers aimed to secure a Super Eight berth with a win.
Namibian opener Nikolaas Davin became the first batter to ‘retire out’ in a T20 World Cup match during his team’s game against England. After a slow start scoring 18 off 16 balls, the 26-year-old walked off in the 6th over to be replaced by David Wiese, who smashed 27 off 12 balls. Reigning champions England stayed alive in the T20 World Cup with a 41-run victory over Namibia in a rain-hit must-win group match in Antigua on Saturday. Harry Brook’s unbeaten 47 off 20 balls propelled England to 122-5 in 10 overs, and Namibia were restricted to 84-3 in their revised target of 126. Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan credited the bowling efforts of Rishad Hossain (3/33) and Mustafizur Rahman (1/12) for their 25-run victory over the Netherlands in the T20 World Cup. Bangladesh narrowly missed out on a crucial four leg-bye runs in the 17th over against South Africa after Mahmudullah was initially given out LBW before DRS overturned it. Tawhid Hridoy, who top-scored with 37, felt those four runs could have changed the match scenario as Bangladesh fell short by just four runs chasing 114. Hridoy also rued a few debatable umpiring calls against them in the low-scoring thriller, stating those tight calls are crucial on tough wickets. India edged out Pakistan by six runs in a thrilling low-scoring T20 World Cup match in New York. Pakistan bowled India out for 119 but Jasprit Bumrah’s 3-14 proved decisive as Pakistan fell short on 113-7 chasing the modest target. Mohammad Rizwan top-scored for Pakistan with 31. Scotland boosted their chances of qualifying for the T20 World Cup second round by thrashing Oman by seven wickets in Antigua. Brandon McMullen’s unbeaten 61 off 31 balls guided Scotland’s successful chase of 151 with nearly seven overs remaining. Opener George Munsey made 41 as Scotland topped Group B. Australia inflicted a crushing 36-run defeat on defending champions England in their T20 World Cup 2024 group match in Barbados. Bangladesh pulled off a last-minute two-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in their T20 World Cup Group D match in Grand Prairie, Texas. Chasing 125, Bangladesh were reeling at 28/3 before Towhid Hridoy’s 40 off 20 balls provided a lifeline. Canada secured their first ever win at a Twenty20 World Cup, defeating Ireland by 12 runs in a Group A match in New York. Defending a modest 137/7, Canada’s bowlers restricted Ireland to 125/7. Despite a late fightback from George Dockrell (30*) and Mark Adair (34), Jeremy Gordon’s excellent final over sealed Canada’s victory.
