China’s recovery in overseas travel from the COVID-19 pandemic is lagging expectations due to rising costs, currency devaluation, visa difficulties, and a preference for domestic and short-haul destinations. This delay in the revival of Chinese outbound tourism, the world’s top spenders pre-pandemic, is impacting travel-related companies, hotels, and retailers globally. While domestic travel in China hit a record during the May Day holiday, international flights remain 30% down compared to 2019 levels.
