For the first time, a heart surgery ward was started on Tuesday at the Indira Gandhi Children Hospital in Kabul, with the first heart surgery due the coming week, an official said.
Acting Health Minister Dr. Ahmad Jawad Usmani, while inaugurating the facility, said it was their first public Heart Surgery Ward in the country.
He said this ward was established and equipped with the financial support of Italy. He added some doctors were sent abroad with Italy’s financial support to get essential training in the heart surgery field and they would now serve in this ward.
He said the first heart surgery operation would be conducted free of cost next week and in the future patients referred by the Red Crescent Society would be operated on here.
Referring to heart disease treatment in the ward, Usmani said: “We strive to expand the services of this ward and conduct more complicated heart operations here.”
He pledged that the Public Health Ministry would speed up the reform process in this hospital, which was the government priority.
