Local govt bodies: Govt now can remove elected representatives
The interim government of Bangladesh has gained new powers to appoint administrators to local administrations, including city corporations, zilla, and upazila parishads, in special circumstances. President Mohammed Shahabuddin approved amendments to four laws, allowing the government to remove elected officials like mayors and councillors from these bodies. The changes enable the appointment of “competent persons or officials” as administrators until further notice. These amendments apply to city corporations, municipalities, zilla, and upazila parishads, significantly expanding the interim government’s control over local administrations.
