New Jersey criminalizes deepfake media under new law
New Jersey has criminalized the creation and distribution of AI-generated deepfakes under legislation signed by Governor Phil Murphy. Offenders could face up to five years in prison and civil lawsuits. The law defines deepfakes as realistic but false representations of someone’s actions or words. It follows advocacy by Westfield High School student Francesca Mani, a deepfake victim herself.
