Papua New Guinea tribal shootouts kill 30
Tribal violence in Papua New Guinea’s highlands has resulted in at least 30 deaths, with hundreds displaced and homes burned. The conflict began in August after illegal miners attacked a landowner in the gold-rich Porgera Valley. Police have been given emergency powers, including authorization to use lethal force, to restore order. The presence of over 100 high-powered weapons has intensified the violence.
