Second hottest July breaks 13-month record streak
July 2024 was the second hottest on record globally, ending a 13-month streak of record-breaking temperatures. The planet was 1.48°C warmer than pre-industrial levels. Copernicus attributes this to greenhouse gas emissions and El Niño. Unusual ocean warming was observed outside typical El Niño-affected areas. Arctic and Antarctic sea ice extent decreased, while global sea temperatures remained near record highs. Climate experts express concern over these trends. Retuers
